One of the major challenges faced by clinical research volunteers and professionals is the prevailing misconceptions among the public about clinical trials and what it’s like to participate.
In a 2013 CISCRP study, 34% of respondents still believed that research participants are treated like animals, not humans. This common misapprehension can be attributed to a lack of general education and awareness of clinical research and its importance in the advancement of medicine.
This lack of education and awareness about clinical research can leave study volunteers feeling unappreciated for their role in advancing public health, delay or prevent the development of new or better treatments in medical science, and make it difficult to draw students to careers in medical research.
To help address these issues, CISCRP recently created a Speakers Bureau specifically tailored to educating and informing the public on clinical research, and encouraging those connected to the research enterprise to act as advocates.
The members of CISCRP’s esteemed Speakers Bureau are:
- Worldwide with members located in 47 cities worldwide and in 26 states nationwide
- Highly trained, skilled and experienced clinical research professionals with an average of over 10 years of experience in clinical research
- Current and former clinical research professionals from the National Institutes of Health and major pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.
- Typically advanced degree holders in medicine, nursing and in the life sciences
- Committed to educating the public on clinical research and willing to travel some distance to speaking engagements
These professionals come prepared to talk for 30 – 45 minutes and to answer questions about careers in clinical research.
Providing access to experts in the industry is important for both engaging audiences about research and careers in the industry, and to honor the role of researchers, investigators, scientists and study participants who contribute to advances in public health.
