For the first time, CISCRP will bring its AWARE for All program to Washington D.C. to raise awareness about clinical research and to provide education among a diverse public and Capitol Hill community. This special event is designed to address the lack of knowledge about the clinical trial process and its impact on public health.
The CISCRP team has started cultivating a planning committee for the DC-based event scheduled for Spring 2015. The program aims to bring the research community, patients and the public, as well as policymakers together to support dialogue and understanding about clinical research participation and the important role of study volunteers. A focus on health issues that are important to the community and outreach to minority groups helps bring a wide cross-section of the local population. AWARE will include free health screenings and food, informational exhibits that feature community organizations and research centers, local physician and patient speakers, and a reception to honor clinical research participants.
Jill McNair, Director of Education, Outreach, and Community Support at CISCRP said, “There is a need for general education about the clinical research process including the risks, benefits, and the rights of participants. Our AWARE programs address this need and recognize those who give the gift of participation. We are hopeful about the opportunities in the capitol to make a real impact, helping to reduce health disparities through increased awareness around clinical research.”
